Carpe Diem! – The Importance of Now!

So lately I have realised that a lot of people including myself, are so focused on the long term, the future. It is almost at the point where everything we all do is because of the future. I believe it is good to think long term and plan for your future, but at the same time it is also okay to remain in the now, enjoy the moment you are in. Sometimes we get so focused on our future and think about a lot of things we want for ourselves and goals we want to achieve. These may include plans and future ideas such as; getting a mortgage for your first property, investments, travelling, buying a car, reaching a certain net worth or salary bracket, relationships and settling down.

Whilst all this is important, it can be a barrier that stops one from enjoying their current situation and living life right now! Since the year began I have taken my life and where I want to be in the future more seriously. I think about my dreams, passions, money, progression and all that kind of stuff. I later found that often i’d have on and off moments where I was just so fed up and felt almost bored because, everything I did or found myself occupied with was because of my future and not the present. The future wasn’t my reality and aside from God no one knows tomorrow or the years ahead of us or if it is even going to come to fruition.

Subconsiously I often forget to enjoy the moment I have now by taking advantage of the time I have and just enjoying myself, especially whilst i’m still young and in my late 20s.

I have learnt that it is important to seize the moment so long as your heart and soul is in it and not think so much of the future so much, that you neglect your present which in some sense is your reality. So how should you go about enjoying now and seizing the moment? Read on and i’ll give a few tips on how to start. These worked for me, so hopefully it does the same for you.

1) Be One With The Moment And What Is Going On Around You

In a moment a lot can happen. There is always so much going on around us. There’s a lot of good and bad. Since we are talking about seizing the moment now, you want to be one with the good things that are going on around you. Such as spending time with friends, family, what is going on? What is happening in the moment? Are you connected to what is going on? Do you feel good about what you’re seeing and thinking? Embrace it and be one with it. Life is one big adventure and you can’t afford to miss every ride and thrill. I remember during my final year of university (first degree) , my friends and I felt so fed up about exams, essays and stress. Our environment simply called for a detox something needed to be done to boost our spirits up again. My friends and I were in the kitchen of our house and one of them just burst out saying “Let’s take a trip! Call up a few of the boys and lets go somewhere for a day or two”. Immediately the rest of us thought it was a great idea and we made arrangements and booked a cabin and arrange a trip to lake district. And it was amazing. Why? Mainly because we were one with the moment and what was going on around us. We were fed up with the stress of university and at that moment, the NOW demanded we needed to take a break, to get away from it all! We completely forgot we were students in the short time we were there and just embraced the adventure, climbed a mountain, enjoyed miraculous views, we drove boats, laughed and just embraced feeling good. Had we not have embraced the moment and the feeling of needing a detox from stress, we would have carried on being miserable undergraduates over nothing.

2) Remember What is important

what is important to me may not be important to you in this life. Some value money and genuine wealth whilst others value peace and harmony more. Importance is all relative. To enjoy the now and seize the moment remember what is important to you. Be real with yourself and quickly examine in whatever moment or situation you’re in. Is what is important to you being affected in some way? deal with it.

3) Be aware of your time

Your time is probably your greatest asset so don’t waste it allowing yourself to be bored cos you have “nothing to do” no disrespect but as an adult in my opinion if you have time to feel and be bored then there’s a problem. I have grown to find time so valuable. I am still working on the skill of effective and efficient time management, but when you can actually be intentional with your time in small ways, it makes a difference. I can’t tell you how heavily I encourage my friends to actually write things down and plan their days, weeks or months on paper and not their damn phones! It does wonders for a the mind and soul and approach to being more time conscious.

4) Listen to your gut instincts

No one knows you better than yourself. Isn’t it funny how the world conditions us to not trust ourselves but always put our trust in others before ourselves? I believe it is part of why some of us miss chances and opportunities to do better for ourselves and make changes in our lives. So much fear and lack of trust in our instincts to really seize the moment. Sometimes that even comes to having a bit more fun, some of us literally rob our own selves from enjoying our lives. Listen to your gut instincts, that’s your guide. Quieting down the noise so you can hear and feel it lead and communicate with you.

5) Embrace The People Around You

Not always easy but it must be done. It is what life is about. Embrace people but also be selective because not everyone has your best interest at heart.

Hope this helps all who feel they have missed their moments. You can seize any moment, time or opportunity right now. Exactly where you are, don’t let the world keep you grounded.

Sincerely Yours

Owen
