How To Enjoy Fitness

Today’s post Is mainly about fitness. I’ve realised that with the world somewhat slowly opening up again and summer on the horizon, many people want to get in shape. Here in the UK, our lockdown has eased up a bit, and gyms have opened again. As exciting as it is to get back into a place of fitness, I can imagine some are anxious about how to get into it. Some of us may not enjoy fitness as much as most people. In today’s blog, I will share practical ways in which you can enjoy fitness and keep you motivated. These are things I do personally, so I will be sharing from experience.

Find A Fitness Buddy

A fitness buddy can help a lot in various ways. It can make your sessions interesting, more challenging, and fun. With a fitness buddy, you also have someone holding you accountable to stay committed and consistent with exercising. A fitness buddy is also ideal if you’re someone who feels clueless and lost when exercising on your own. It makes the process less lonely and supports you both physically, personally, and emotionally.

Switch it up! Don’t do the same workouts every day because you are bound to get bored eventually. If you find yourself getting bored and stagnating, change your fitness regime. If you go running regularly, maybe change the route. If you’re working with weights, change the workouts and try new ones. If overall you get fed up with fitness in a gym environment, try working out at home or outdoors. You can also play a sport such as football (soccer if you’re American), basketball or swimming. I have not been to the gym for a long time mainly because before covid I felt bored and too burnt out to go because it didn’t fit my lifestyle. The few times I did attend, I found myself not enjoying it the way I once did because I had to be mindful of time. Currently, I do home workouts, and I am enjoying it. I have been making slow progress and am beginning to love and enjoy fitness again. Change is good sometimes.

Set SMART Fitness Goals

SMART = Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-specific. Once you have that on your mind, you can set fitness goals for yourself to accomplish. It does not always have to be anything crazy like losing 2stone in a month. It can be something small, like increasing the amount of time you exercise after a set period. Having a fitness goal will motivate you to keep at it even when you don’t feel like it. As you keep reaching these goals, it adds to your confidence and attitude towards fitness and your journey. I advise sometimes sharing the goal with a gym buddy, especially if you’re not the most self-disciplined.

Create A Fitness Playlist

I don’t know about you but exercising for a long period without the right music suited to my taste throws me off. Depending on what music you like, I strongly advise you to create a playlist. You need something that will stimulate you physically. I listen to rap and hip hop mostly because that is my taste and preference in music. The base and tonality in some of the lyrics and words get me fired up. At times, it may be a softer sound, which puts me in a calm zone to steadily glide through my workouts.

Start Slow, Take Your Time

To put it simply, if you’re just getting started on your fitness journey, take your time. Do not try to compete with others; you’re on your journey. Be patient with yourself. Slow and steady always wins. Even with people like myself, who have been on and off for years, I always ensure I’m patient with myself. I prefer to exercise and work out on my own because that is what works for me, and it enables me to orchestrate my process and growth without external influences.

I hope this has helped encourage you in your fitness journey; please add a comment if you have any other ideas, you believe others can learn from. Please also understand that I am not an expert or fitness trainer with any certifications or credentials. I’m just sharing from experience that has worked for me and some I believe are beneficial generally.

Sincerely Yours

  2. One of my fave things about working out is listening to music. I don’t think I would enjoy it as much if I didn’t!

    1. Me too! It puts you on that zone and without music I struggle to get in the vibe to be honest 😅
