I was excited to start reading this book based on other reviews I have read and, a friend recommended it to me a while ago. This book is full of adventure, I like the imagery that the writer uses to bring the story to life. I could almost picture the book playing out almost like a movie.
The book is about chasing your dreams, pursuing your journey, and finding your compass in life. The writer Paul Coelho talks about this through a fictitious tale about Santiago. Santiago is a young shepherd boy with a dream and passion for more out of life and wanting more than he was given. The setting of this book is in Spain and Egypt. Santiago originally coming from Spain sets out on a voyage to find his treasure which leads him on a trip to Egypt.
Along the way, he meets many people that he impacts and vice versa. Santiago learns many life lessons along the way that challenge his thinking and perspective on life. He learned about his faith and his attitude towards his dreams and pursuits.
As a reader, you witness Santiago go through various trials and triumphs to get to his treasure. You read about him feeling doubtful about his dream and pursuits, wanting to give up and going back to being a shepherd. One key thing I learnt from this book is that when you have a dream, you must act, or you will spend your life daydreaming and thinking about “what if?”.
The book also incorporates elements of spirituality. It refers to Urim and Thummim and the Quran, God, Allah, and the universe and understanding spiritual principles in various ways. The story is somewhat unpredictable, but in some ways predictable when you get a sense of the people he meets along the way and their character.
Although this is a book about dreams and chasing one’s unique path, I appreciate how the writer does not present this as a typical self-help expert on life approach. It is through a story which is relatable to many in different ways.
Overall Rating of the Book: 4/5
